triCerat's ScrewDrivers v4: Printing Unleashed

Printing is a complex process with many possible points of failure. The application, user, operating system, and print device must all work in conjunction to produce the expected physical output. Configuring and administering a printer and print process in a Microsoft Windows workstation environment is a complex task. Printing in a server-based computing (Microsoft Terminal Server, Citrix Metaframe/Presentation Server, Ericom WebConnect) environment causes a number of additional problems. In this paper, a solution from triCerat called ScrewDrivers is presented which solves many of the administrative problems related to printing in such an environment, while also providing users with a better-quality experience.

triCerat's Simplify Profiles:
Roaming Environments Without Roaming Profiles

Part of the attraction of server-based computing is the promise of giving users the same computing experience from any device they log into. However, accomplishing this reality can be more difficult than it may appear at first. The problem lies in the way that NT-based operating systems (including not only NT4 but also Windows 2000 and Windows Server 2003) store and apply per-user settings. The following pages will explain some of the difficulties of tuning user settings for terminal server users and explain how triCerat’s Simplify Profiles can alleviate these difficulties.

In Depth Look at Printing In Terminal Services Environments

Although the resurgence of terminal environments in the workplace simplified the management of end user systems and applications, it was not designed to properly support a very critical function: printing. Most end users email one another attachments or share drives on the network, however, many of them will also print emails or documents for future reference. Workplace documents do not yet fully exist in soft format; end users still require hard copies. Terminal Services complicates printing because it removes much of the printing process from the client computers. So, what are your options for supporting printing for multiple printers across multiple platforms?

The Facts About EMF Printing

In cases where auto-creation of print drivers fail or loading of drivers is not an option in a Citrix Presentation Server 4.0 environment, a “universal print driver” has been included. This addition uses EMF or “Enhanced Meta File” format. EMF is a 32 bit intermediary image format developed by Microsoft as the successor to the 16-bit WMF. EMF was once widely used as a work-around for some graphic issues w/in certain applications.

triCerat's Simplify Lockdown:
Secure the User Workspace with Simplify Lockdown

Windows’ default behavior is to leave everything on. As is evident from the design of Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server, Microsoft has realized that this default behavior may make it easier to keep servers and workstations functional but also leaves them wide open to security threats. Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are more locked-down than previous versions of Windows. However, unless an application is specifically denied to a user--for example, Active Directory Users and Computers--that user can still run the application. This leaves computers wide open to the threat of Trojans and other malicious software, not to mention possibly using up licenses intendedfor other users.

Streamlining the User Interface with Simplify Lockdown

One benefit of server-based computing is that it can make it easier for task-based workers to find the applications they need to do their jobs. If they need an application, they can see it. If they don’t, they can’t. This simplifies the training of inexperienced personnel, eliminates distractions, reduces support effort, and benefits productivity. Organizations that run native Terminal Server without Citrix MetaFrame are at a disadvantage when it comes to deploying tightly controlled user environments. The Simplify Lockdown component of Simplify Suite overcomes this challenge, enabling the rapid configuration and deployment of user environments fine-tuned to meet the specific requirements of individuals, user groups, or location-based workstations supported by your Terminal Server farm.

Perceived Performance
Tuning a System for What Really Matters

This white paper explains the subtle difference between tuning a computer for maximum computational performance and tuning it for what we call “perceived performance.” Perceived performance is concerned with human perception of system performance – and ultimately organizational productivity. Specifically, this paper addresses perceived performance associated with multi-user systems based on Microsoft Windows Terminal Server – and optionally Citrix MetaFrame.
