Monitor and Control Applications

Navigating today’s virtual jungle with the confidence that you’re maintaining application security can be a daunting task. Whether you're an IT Manager or the everyday user, there are potential risks you face on a daily basis when interacting with all the Internet has to offer.

Server security lapses and application security breaches degrade business performance, increase support costs, and reduce profitability. Business investments in IT security continue to rise as do threats to Windows application delivery platforms. Whether you choose to restrict applications with Windows security policy or a real-time server lockdown solution, application security is a must in business networks and application delivery environments.

Control Application Access and Windows Application Security

In addition to the threat posed by hackers, server security may be under attack by malicious or curious employees. They may access Run, the Command Prompt, or Control Panel, causing damage by altering system settings or accessing data that might be off limits. By nature, Windows application security is minimal and is thus considered quite vulnerable.

Overcoming this vulnerability in your server security means containing users to only the applications and services they require for work-related tasks. In controlling application access in the user environment, you enhance user productivity, reduce security vulnerabilities, as well as minimize the use of corporate computing resources for personal business or pleasure.

It is also the job of the administrator to control application access until that environment complies with your organization’s security and access policies. From a server security standpoint, it is much safer to lockdown everything and then control application access from that point. In general, an average user will have a far narrower set of requirements in their work environment in comparison to that desired and/or required on their home workstation.

Restrict Applications that Consume CPU

Another consideration are your hardware capacities and bandwidth resources. Imagine you have 10 remote users each running 20 different applications. If you don't have a comprehensive computing environment and excellent bandwidth available to the remote users, your overall system performance will decline substantially.

Perhaps you have the hapless employee who plays a little Tetris during his Monday morning conference call. What he doesn’t realize is his seemingly innocent distraction may actually slow his fellow users computing abilities to a crawl, creating a sluggish and frustrating user environment for the rest of the group. It is critical that you find a way to contain this kind of activity, by restricting access to certain applications and/or effectively managing your application delivery processes. If you don’t, your remote users may abandon your remote environment and find their way to less secure alternatives.

Windows Security Policy

Although Group Policies and registry edits can be used to lockdown user environments, they are time consuming and complex to apply, often leaving server security vulnerable. Securing your system with Windows Security Policy could also leave end users confused, as they click on desktop icons and application settings that seem available, yet don’t work.

A Lockdown Solution

Simplify Lockdown replaces Windows Security Policy administration so you can effectively deliver tightly controlled and secure user environments that prevent downtime and lost productivity.

Lockdown enhances security by making it easy to provide end users with access to only the specific application icons and executables they require to do their jobs. Its innovative granting technology eliminates the need for policy edits and scripting. Using white and black lists, Simplify Lockdown closes backdoors and prevents unauthorized executables (i.e., viruses, Trojans, legitimate apps that are off limits, and Spyware) from running in Terminal Server sessions.

Control and monitor application access with triCerat's Lockdown Solution, and you'll improve your application security, server security and application delivery process while extending your environment. It is all too easy to wind up with an application security solution that doesn’t really fit your protection needs.
