Remote Desktop Services

Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is the term replacing Microsoft's Terminal Services. Microsoft chose the new moniker because RDS includes more functionality than what Terminal Services offers. RDS currently supports VDI, remote applications, and remote desktop sessions such as Aero graphics and VOIP.

RDS is an integral part of Microsoft Windows, both server and client versions alike, that permits a user to access applications and data from a remote machine over a network. Remote Desktop Services is Microsoft's version of thin client computing where anything from Windows applications to the entire desktop can be accessed from a remote client end point. The user interface of an application is the only component presented at the client. Any input is redirected over the network to the server where all application execution takes place.

Who can run RDS?

The vast majority of companies have the capability to run RDS. Remote Desktop Services can run on anything from fully equipped computers to stripped down machines with basic protocol capabilities. As long as the terminal services protocol is supported, any client can be utilized.
