Simplifiy Profiles

User personalization without roaming profiles

Bloated roaming profiles are a leading cause of missing profile data and the resulting calls to IT from frustrated users. They lead to sluggish logon times, erratic application behavior, and crashed workstations. As a result, you spend hours recreating user profiles, writing complex GPOs and making tedious registry edits to keep your environment from going under.

Tricerat Simplify Profiles eliminates roaming profile problems. It provides all the administrative control of mandatory profiles while still allowing users to customize and save their personalized settings. Finally, a solution that provides centralized control for administrators and stable, flexible workspaces for users.

How Simplify Profiles Works

Simplify Profiles uses the Object Panel to create Group Policies, HCKU manipulations, HKLM manipulations, Drive Mapping and Redirection, as well as Setting Environmental Variables.

In the console graphic below, a user is selected to be programmed from the Owners Panel.  Noting that the selected user now appears at the top of the Assignments Panel, we then use the custom-created object to drag and drop assignments to the Assignments Panel.

When the selected user signs on, they will receive the applied policies.

Simplify Profiles does not hinder existing Windows policies, assignments, or other scripts (including GPOs) as they will continue to apply to the user’s session. Simplify Profiles applies personalized settings to the user’s profile (ntuser.dat) after Windows has loaded the profile; therefore the Simplify Profile settings will take precedence over these settings.

At Logoff, Simplify Profiles captures values from the registry to save before the profile is unloaded. Once Simplify Profiles completes, Windows unloads the profile normally. Using the Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup (UPHC) service will help ensure graceful Log Outs in more complex environments.

Assignments for Simplify Profiles are made with the RegSet plug-in pulling data from the SQL database, which is much more efficient than GPOs, scripts, and other utilities. Typically, implementing Simplify Profiles includes replacing the inefficient configurations with Simplify Profiles' assignments. The best practice use for Simplify Profiles would be to start with a baseline mandatory profile appropriate for the terminal server environment, and then apply customized settings for each user through Simplify Profiles.
