Obama Encourages Government to Go Paperless
December 22, 2011

In a memo dated November 28th, President Obama instructed federal agencies to embrace the move from paper to electronic documents. The memo also outlined ideas for more efficient records management systems and processes, such as utilizing cloud-based technologies or other virtual storage systems.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), who oversees record keeping for the federal government, collects 475 million pages a year, and growing. It’s no wonder why Obama believes that using e-records could be extremely beneficial – environmentally and financially.

By the end of the first quarter of 2012, agencies must submit a plan for using e-records to manage documentation to David Ferriero, head of the NARA and the Office of Management and Budget. Obama is also strongly encouraging agencies to incorporate email and social media into their plans.

After compiling agencies’ plans, feds will draft a standard records management policy for all agencies to adhere to. Obama continued in his memo that this will support cutting administration costs and facilitate better communication between government and citizens.
