According to Information Weekly’s Interop event in Mumbai, “Improved Collaboration” is considered one of the top 10 CIO priorities for next year.
Think about it: as businesses grow, employees move and spread out across the country, even across the globe. But regardless of whether your colleagues are not in the same time zone, communication is key. In order to meet the demands of business growth, productivity and innovation have to continue to increase. Information may need to travel great distances in a short period of time and you will need to be prepared to support it.
Collaborative technology such as Microsoft’s SharePoint and Apple’s The Cloud were designed to not only create a means of communication from virtually anywhere, but also foster communication for those on the go. Other platforms have developed tools to support videoconferencing and Web 2.0 such as Chatter and Yammer.
But are these tools effective? In a study done in early 2011, 53 companies found that “user adoption of Web collaboration technologies – wikis, social networking, predictive markets, and the like – lags initial deployment by five to eight quarters.“ Why? Collaboration is much different from CRM or ERP; these can be enforced from someone in higher command. Collaboration is more personal and individuals need to understand the value before selecting the tools they decide to use.
So what now? Here are a few links to help you navigate through the thousands of available collaborative tools:
