As many of you know, our Simplify products require a SQL database in order to operate. I recently received an email from Microsoft as part of the TechNet subscription that stated a new Service Pack is available for the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 software.
There were a few critical updates made to the SQL Server 2008 software in this service pack update. As a part of the R2 version of SQL 2008, the Data-tier function was put in for packaging of tiered databases as a part of an application. I'm sure that those of you who are SQL Database Administrators, or even System/Network Administrators with SQL responsibilities, had a big smile on your face when this feature was announced for release. With the new Service Pack installed, there are now improved capabilities for the Data-tier Application feature. You can deploy, upgrade, register, extract, and delete DACs. SP2 does not upgrade the SQL Server 2008 client tools to support DACs.
In addition, an instance of the SQL Server 2008 Database Engine can be enrolled with a SQL Server 2008 R2 Utility Control Point as a managed instance of SQL Server. This is crucial in a rapidly developing technological society. The Utility Control Point allows for each managed instance of SQL Server and every data-tier application component to be a member of only one SQL Server Utility, thus simplifying the SQL Database maintenance process.
There are a few other updates that I didn't cover in this blog, but I trust, as IT professionals, that this has sparked your interest enough to do further investigating. The download for this service pack is available on the Microsoft website:
