Building vs. Buying

Remote Desktop Printing Solution

As I've mentioned in my previous blog, administrators often inherit an environment that can be improved upon.  In many cases the issues that administrators face are not hardware-related, but arise from environment management software, or the lack thereof. One of the main purposes of this blog entry is to get an understanding of what administrators want when it comes to managing their users.

Microsoft released Server 2003 and 2008 to help companies better manage their infrastructure, but it can be overwhelming to learn a new OS. A good friend of mine who is an administrator said to me, “I just figured out Server 2003 and now I have to learn 2008…who has the time?” He's certainly too busy. The environment he manages has an application that handles user profiles, another application that handles printing, and a list of yet other applications that keep his environment working. The downside to this array of applications is that he seems to spend 60% of his workday “babysitting” these applications.  If he leaves it alone, either an application stops responding or simply crashes his server. Babysitting these apps create a monotonous and unnecessary day-to-day routine for him or any administrator in his position I'd imagine.

So, I have a question for all you admins: what is the ideal all-in-one software solution? In your mind, what should be the main components of this software solution? If available, would you stop purchasing add-on solutions in order to buy a solution that solves your problems before they start? Or do you prefer to face your problems as they arise and buy apps as needed?

You speak, we listen.
